Blue Monday - Gaming for Happiness

Written by

Blue Monday is on its way. It’s known as the most depressing day of the year. Whether it’s the cold nights or post-Christmas blues, you might find yourself feeling low. We get it, it’s been tough.

But don’t forget, the idea of recognising Blue Monday on the third week of January every year is to empower and inspire you. It’s a day for taking action and making bold life decisions, whether that’s a career change, a new hobby, or simply taking some time for yourself.

However, if things have been harder than usual for you, we’ve got you. A recent study by The Oxford Internet Institute reveals that people who play video games for long periods of time tend to feel happier than those who don’t.

Video games offer us an easy escape from the stresses of modern life. No matter what you’ve got going on, you can slip into a fantasy world within seconds. You can explore new lands, hang out with friends in virtual spaces, and forget about everything else.

So, as Blue Monday arrives, fight off the blues by getting cosy and curling up with your favourite games. Need some inspiration? Here’s some of our go-to games when we need a dose of happiness.

The Sims

We’re beginning with the big one. This long-standing life-simulation offers a healthy escape from everyday life, serving up happiness on a plate.

There’s something calming about creating a family, building your dream home, and helping them achieve their dreams. And with all the expansion packs these days, you can send your Sims to university, become a crazy cat lady, or travel the world on a riverboat.

The Sims doesn’t have a campaign, it’s entirely your sandbox to do with whatever you want. It’s all about empowering creativity and unlocking your imagination, and there’s no way playing God can’t make you happy.

Animal Crossing

We know we’re always talking about our favourite Island building game, but how could we not mention it in a list about games that make us happy, right?

Whether you’re spending your days fishing, harvesting fruit, or throwing parties for your Villagers; playing Animal Crossing is like a warm hug of wholesomeness.

There’s something so charming about Animal Crossing. Whilst there’s plenty of errands to run for the Nooks, what you do and when you do it is up to you. Don’t fancy catching bugs today? Then don’t, hit the beach and collect seashells instead! Want to create the cosiest island home imaginable? You can do it, and then some!

Super Mario Odyssey

What could be cosier and cuter than spending some time with the world’s favourite plumber. Super Mario Odyssey is all about adventure, and who doesn’t like exploring?

On a mission to rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser once more, you’ll fly around the Kingdoms in an airship called the Odyssey. You’ll need to collect power moons, battle anthropomorphic rabbit wedding planners, and play hide-and-seek with Luigi’s balloons.

It’s all a bit ridiculous as always, and when you need a pick-me-up, who doesn’t love a good laugh?

Planet Coaster / Planet Zoo

Some of our happiest moments come from memories. And that’s what the ‘Planet’ series does best. Whether you’re making new ones or recreating old ones, Planet Coaster and Planet Zoo let you build the theme park and zoos of your childhood and your dreams. And for us, that’s happiness in a heartbeat.

Whether you’re building the world’s biggest rollercoaster or recreating your favourite Zoo, there’s something so feel good about these games. There’s a cute cast of park guests and animals to meet, two soundtracks that ooze happiness, and if that wasn’t enough, there’s literally nothing stopping you from just sitting and watching the sunset over your creations.

Simply put, it’s wonderful.

Let us know the games that make you happy in the comments below, and if you need help getting set up, don’t forget our starter packs and accessory bundles here.
